The Future of ITO: Transparent Conductor and ITO Replacement Markets
NanoMarkets, March 2008, Pages: 92
Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is the most widely used transparent conductor in the display industry and also finds applications in photovoltaics, EL lighting and a variety of other optical and electronic applications. Yet, ITO has been described as the material that we love to hate,' and for good reason. Indium is in short supply and ITO is expensive.
ITO is also far from ideal for some of the fastest growing applications sectors in which transparent conductors are used. It cracks when used in the current generation of touch screen displays and it is likely to do so in next-generation rollable displays. When a recent R&D project resulted in an 'ITO-less' OLED lighting array, it was considered a considerable achievement.
The negatives for ITO stack up, and it is increasingly clear that there are major new opportunities for materials to replace it. This report analyzes and quantifies those opportunities. It also provides profiles of the firms that seeking new ways to make money from the ITO replacement market:
We discuss where other transparent conducting oxides (such as zinc oxide are making an impact and how they will fit into the future transparent conductor market
We examine how conductive polymers are being promoted as ITO replacements and how they are being used today in the display industry
We review the successes and failures of both R&D and commercialization strategies for nanomaterials to create a generation of new transparent conductors with enhanced electrical performance, flexibility and cost. This report also discusses the future of ITO itself. This includes a thorough analysis of the future of the ITO supply chain; from the zinc mine to the display. It also includes an analysis of the future impact of Indium pricing on the ITO business. Finally, the report covers new types of ITO materials including ITO inks, ITO nanopowders, and transparent conductors that combine ITO with other materials.
This report also discusses the strategic marketing issues that will have to be addressed to enable growth in all these markets and includes an eight-year forecast of novel ITO formulations and alternatives. It also profiles the activities of leading companies and labs working in this field. The study will be of vital interest to firms in the ITO industry itself, as well as firms with new or existing materials that can serve as ITO replacements. Indeed, any business that manufactures, uses or invests in transparent conductors will find much to interest them in this report.
